During this period I was mainly focusing on expressive life drawing and painting classes at Corban’s Art Estate, with tutors Allie Eagle and Cushla Parakowhai, and consequently was not spending a great deal of time on other work. When Allie stopped teaching to concentrate on her own painting, a group of her students decided to form a collective (Ten Last Strokes), and to continue painting together at Corban’s Art Estate.
Several portrait-based series emerged from Allie’s teaching, including part of the body of work I exhibited in the Where Shall We Call Home? exhibition, a fundraising arts event for refugee resettlement, which took place at Depot Artspace in June/July 2017. Also included in this exhibition was a series of more abstract works relating specifically to the boat refugee crisis - The Region Series.
